A website brief template, with the questions from our 20-minute call

The short answer

A website brief says what you sell, what you have now and what the new site needs to do, then what you have ready, when you’d like to launch and whether the price works. This template has the 23 questions we ask before and on our 20-minute call, as a document to fill in.

Key facts

As of October 2026

  • Our 20-minute call covers what you sell, what you have now, and what it needs to do.
  • The brief has 23 questions in 7 parts, each one a question our pages or our call already ask.
  • After the call, the scope comes in writing: what’s included, what isn’t, the price, the dates, and what we need from you and by when. Nothing starts until you’ve agreed it.
  • There’s nothing to pay to find out what a project costs.
  • Every message gets a reply within one working day.

What’s in the website brief template?

A file to fill in, with these 23 questions and an answer line under each. It’s a Markdown file (.md): plain text, so it opens in any text editor, and apps that read Markdown show its headings. Free to use for your own project or your clients’.

What you have now

  1. 6.Where do you sell now?

Instagram, Facebook, Etsy, eBay or Vinted, a market stall or shop, or not selling yet.

  5. 10.What’s in your name now, and what access do you have?

The domain, the hosting or Shopify account, and the admin logins matter most.

What it needs to do

  1. 11.What does the new site need to do?

  2. 12.What’s the main reason for the project?

For example: it looks dated, it doesn’t work well on phones, it’s slow, visitors don’t buy, or you have new branding.

  3. 13.If you’re moving to a new platform, what needs to move?

Products, customers, past orders, gift cards, blog posts and pages.

What you have ready

  1. 14.Photos of every product

Same light, same background. A phone is enough.

  2. 15.Descriptions

Size, material, what’s in the box. Write down the answers you give in DMs.

  3. 16.Prices and stock

One sheet, every product, every variant.

  4. 17.Delivery rates

What you charge, where you ship, how long it takes.

  5. 18.Returns policy

How it works, in plain words.

  6. 19.A logo, even a simple one

  7. 20.For a website rather than a store, your content

The words for each page, ready to send.

When, and the price

  1. 21.When would you like to launch?

Within a month, in 1–3 months, or just looking for now.

  2. 22.Does the price work for you?

Yes, you’d like to talk it through, or not right now.

Anything else

  1. 23.Anything not covered here?

Why write a website brief?

So that whoever builds the site prices the job you need, not a guess at it. With us, your answers become the scope, in writing: what’s included, what isn’t, the price, the dates, and what we need from you and by when. Nothing starts until you’ve agreed it.

What should I have ready before I brief a web designer?

For a website, your content: the words for each page, and your logo if you have one.

Six things to get ready before you pay anyone to build your store.

  • Photos of every product. Same light, same background. A phone is enough.
  • Descriptions. Size, material, what’s in the box. Write down the answers you give in DMs.
  • Prices and stock. One sheet, every product, every variant.
  • Delivery rates. What you charge, where you ship, how long it takes.
  • Returns policy. How it works, in plain words.
  • A logo, even a simple one.

What happens after I send a brief?

  1. 01

    We reply

Within one working day, by email or on WhatsApp, whichever you used.

  2. 02

    A 20-minute call

What you sell, what you have now, what it needs to do. If a package fits, we say which. If nothing does, we say that too.

  3. 03

    The scope, in writing

What’s included, what isn’t, the price, the dates, and what we need from you and by when. Nothing starts until you’ve agreed it.

  4. 04

    You decide

Nothing starts, and nothing is paid, until you’ve agreed the scope.

What else do people ask?

What should a website brief include?

What you sell and who buys it, what you have now, what the site needs to do, what you have ready, when you’d like to launch, and whether the price works. Those are the 23 questions in this template.

Do I have to answer every question?

No. Answer what you can, and leave the rest for the call. If you’re not ready yet, we’ll say so.

What format is the template in?

A Markdown file (.md). It’s plain text, so it opens in any text editor, ready to fill in, and apps that read Markdown show its headings. The questions are also on this page.

Can I email the brief instead of booking a call?

Yes. Email it to contact@centangleglobal.com, and we’ll reply within one working day with what we’d do first and what it would cost. If nothing fits, we’ll say that instead.

Is the 20-minute call free?

Yes. There’s nothing to pay to find out what a project costs, and no newsletter or follow-up sequence afterwards.

Can I use this template for my own clients?

Yes, you have our permission: download it, change it to suit the job and use it with your clients. A link back to this page is appreciated, not required.

Rather talk it through?

Book a 20-minute call, and bring the brief if you’ve filled it in. We’ll tell you which service fits, what it costs, what it doesn’t include, and when it could be live. If nothing fits, we’ll say so.
